Job Description



SUMMARY:



This position will be involved with supporting the goals of the respective Brand. Performs a variety of lead, administrative and analytical duties in support of the underwriting function and training and engagement. Identifies and develops training programs that directly support company goals and objectives. Analyzes, researches and reports on underwriting trends, issues, laws, rules, regulations, best practices and provides recommendations. Exercises broad discretion and judgment based on underwriting guidelines and ensures consistency and integrity corporately and between business units. Additionally, this person will be involved in audits to ensure that policies and procedures are being followed.



RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:




  • Analyzes, researches and reports on underwriting trends, issues, laws, rules, regulations and best practices, and creates and implements reference materials, training programs and other pertinent communications.
  • Acts as independent visionary and proactive authority, providing in-depth analysis of underwriting, financial, statistical, industry, and regulatory perspectives.
  • Researches, develops and provides input on policies and procedures for underwriting.
  • Researches new states for potential profitable entry and provides educational material, as necessary.
  • Analyzes and reviews accounts above the authority limits of managers, underwriters and support staff and makes determination to accept or reject business in conjunction with Corporate Underwriting.
  • Works directly with internal and external customers and project teams to ensure successful implementations of initiatives or work activities which may be highly confidential and sensitive.
  • Investigates types or classes of business with loss ratio concerns and the development of relevant corrective action plans
  • Acts as a referral underwriter, as necessary.
  • Participates in underwriting audits.
  • Researches, develops, and delivers training materials for internal and external customers.
  • Assists with the underwriting trainee programs as needed.
  • Keeps abreast of best practices in underwriting concepts, procedures and multi-line environments.
  • Works with Corporate Underwriting and respective Brand underwriting departments with setting appropriate premium rates and issuing of coverage.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from business units, agents, policyholders and others on underwriting processes and decisions.
  • Participates in developing department goals, objectives and systems.
  • Develop recommendations to change related existing policies and programs.
  • Identify group training needs through surveys.

  • Contributes effectively in cross functional teams; may take on leadership role or fill in for the leader in their absence.
  • Demonstrates proper collaboration in exchange of relevant elements with other disciplines (e.g., claims, loss control).
  • Develops recommendations to change existing policies/programs.
  • Demonstrates well-developed conflict management/negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Provides assistance with training, development and mentoring of underwriting staff

    EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:





    EDUCATION:



    Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance or related field or the equivalent in relevant coursework and experience. Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged. CPCU designation strongly preferred. Bi-lingual preferred.



    EXPERIENCE:



    Senior Insurance Operations Advisor:

    Minimum ten years experience in a Worker's Compensation or Property & Casualty underwriting environment. Thorough familiarity with Workers' Compensation or Property & Casualty underwriting concepts that provide the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities. Three years demonstrated leadership in an Underwriting environment required.



    SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:



    Insurance Operations Advisor:


  • Strong knowledge of workers compensation insurance and underwriting techniques.
  • Knowledge of insurance operations including state jurisdictional requirements.
  • In-depth knowledge of various rating plans and pricing mechanisms (retro's, retention, large deductibles).
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams in meeting company objectives, including BD, Audit, Underwriting, and Loss Control Consulting.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate technical training.
  • Demonstrated superior judgment in evaluating and determining the proper pricing for prospective policyholders using corporate underwriting guidelines by accepting or rejecting risks for the purposes of issuing workers' compensation insurance coverage.
  • Strong knowledge of appropriate jurisdictional workers' compensation laws, regulatory authorities, industry trends and their impact.
  • Ability to understand business needs and conceptualize and implement processes and procedures that support business strategies.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating and accepting or rejecting workers compensation risks for the purposes of issuing insurance coverage.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policy documents, technical and financial information and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to research workers compensation laws, regulations or issues specific, in order to offer guidance and/or direction to others.
  • Ability to take a lead role in large account new business acquisition and renewal retention strategies.
  • Ability to train and mentor others

    WORKING CONDITIONS:



    Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Minimal travel may be required with occasional overnight stays.
