Job Description


Responsible for reviewing and evaluating Workers' Compensation insurance applications, renewals, and repricings to determine risk acceptability and coverage for assigned book of business. Sets appropriate premium rates and coverage and answers questions from applicants and brokers regarding underwriting processes and decisions.


  • Produces new and renewal business in accordance with the business plan objectives for assigned territory.
  • Handles an assigned book of business. Quotes, binds and renews business that encompasses a majority of customers.
  • Assesses and determines risk acceptability for new and renewal business within target and acceptable industries. Contacts insured to obtain additional information as necessary.
  • Analyze loss control reports, industry periodical's, quantitative and qualitative data, using clear underwriting judgment to make appropriate decisions within authority.
  • Conduct qualitative analysis of online quotes/submissions/bound accounts etc.
  • Prepares detail of work plans and schedules, completes detailed analysis and research, identifies options, prepares reports for management and recommends action or change for assigned accounts.
  • Stays abreast of new and commonly used underwriting concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Sets appropriate premium rates and issues coverage within authority.
  • Responds to questions from brokers and/or applicants regarding underwriting processes and decisions.
  • Support the maintenance of strong relationships with agents, internal and external customers.
  • Develops test experience modifications for accounts.
  • Prepares for and participates in review meetings as requested.
  • Represent the enterprise in meetings with insured's and agencies as necessary.

    Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance or related field or the equivalent in relevant coursework and experience. Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged. Bi-lingual preferred

    Regional Underwriter

    Minimum three years experience in an underwriting environment. Thorough familiarity with Workers' Compensation or Property & Casualty underwriting concepts that provide the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.


  • Ability to exercise advanced judgment skills in evaluating and determining the proper pricing for prospective policyholders using corporate underwriting guidelines by accepting or rejecting risks for the purposes of issuing workers' compensation insurance coverage.
  • Knowledge of occupational classification codes, loss ratios, claims histories, retention plan, scheduled rating related to workers compensation.
  • Ability to support the maintenance of agency relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Knowledge of appropriate jurisdictional workers compensation laws.
  • Ability to calculate expected pricing, dividends, and premium quotations.
  • Ability to comprehend the consequences of various situations and address them or refer them for appropriate decision making.
  • Ability to effectively exchange information clearly and concisely, and present ideas, reports, facts and other information, and respond to questions as appropriate.
  • Ability to be innovative and creative when presented with unique situations.
  • Ability to analyze and solve practical problems which deal with a variety of variables.
  • Ability to make competent, independent decisions.
  • Ability to analyze and manage data.
  • Ability to meet customers changing needs.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to shift priorities appropriately.


    Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Travel may be required with occasional overnight stays. Must posses a valid driver's license with a record that meets corporate standards.
