Job Description

This position is responsible for monitoring the Company's compliance with tax laws and regulations. Manages the timely completion and filing of the Federal tax provision, Federal tax return, State income and indirect tax returns in 50 states. Informs all levels of management on new tax laws, tax updates and their potential impact. Coordinates corporate tax audits. Recommends and implements methods and procedures to minimize tax liability or promote tax savings. Manages the activities and functions of area or section including but not limited to planning, organization, problem solving, staff development and communication. Close interaction with personnel and management within or outside department and within the broader enterprise tax department in performing duties and assignments. Responsible for preparation of Statutory and GAAP footnotes, as well as tax forecasts. Performs other functions as assigned by management.


  • Prepares income tax provisions and the computation of deferred tax balances in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and statutory accounting principles (SAP).
  • Has overall responsibility for completing the federal tax provision and validation of deferred tax assets/liabilities on a GAAP and Statutory basis.
  • Responsible for the integration of the federal tax returns for all entities into compatible Federal Income Tax software (One Source). Returns include, but are not limited to, federal form 1120and 1120PC.
  • Prepares quarterly and annual regulatory statements and filings in all states for all entities.
  • Prepares tax and assessment work papers and returns while providing other taxation support for all entities in all 50 states.
  • Prepares complex month end journal entries, analyze account activity, reconcile general ledger accounts, and propose correcting entries when necessary.
  • Performs research on regulatory and tax changes in each of the 50 states, analyzes and communicates corporate impact and develops and coordinates implementation where appropriate.
  • Reviews complex, standard and routine daily and month end journal entries.
  • Performs advanced financial analysis and prepares special reports upon request.
  • Facilitates and supports both external and internal audits of financial, tax and regulatory financial reports and filings providing detail schedules and support as required.
  • Routinely coordinate and communicate with Executives of the Company, accounting and other staff at the Parent and various state regulator.
  • Provides guidance, training and direction to coworkers.
  • Supports system installations, conversions and upgrades, including report design, development and testing.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information processed.
  • Works with minimum supervision.

  • Advanced knowledge of, and the ability to accurately interpret and apply statutory and generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret financial reports and statements.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory and tax guidance.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, database and other desktop software.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial systems, process flows and internal controls.
  • Knowledge of multi-entity accounting and reporting
  • Ability to establish work flows
  • Ability to train and mentor others
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize work and forecast resources necessary to meet business objectives.
  • Ability to perform intermediate mathematical computations.
  • Ability to perform other assignments at locations outside the office.

    Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is required. Continuous learning, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy, is required. Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.


    Five years relevant accounting experience that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities.

    Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Two years of Insurance tax industry experience is preferred. Experience with multi-entity accounting is also preferred.


    Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Some travel will be required.
