COBX - Senior Health Services


The Communications Manager position will develop and implement communications strategies and tactics on a wide range of advocacy and other issues to advance thought leadership for key leaders of Senior Health Services. The Communications Manager will develop narrative and positively position SHS leaders by producing impactful and timely content in speeches, talking points, and PowerPoint presentations before a wide range of audiences. Develops and executes strategies to gain additional visibility and extend the reach of SHS leaders' voices.


  • Develops original content, researches and writes speeches, talking points, video scripts and creates PowerPoint presentations for the SHS President or other executives for a variety of occasions; some that require sensitivity.
  • Collaborates with appropriate SHS and BCBSM executives and staff on the concepts and tone to be conveyed in materials.
  • Performs additional research as necessary.
  • Materials reflect the style of the communicator (e.g., full script, talking points or brief message points in a formal or more conversational style) and reflect a consistent style and punctuation practices in the finished product
  • Determines and makes recommendations on the overall organization of the presentations and edits the information for clarity and accuracy. Oversees the review and approval process, including edits from the SHS Senior Executives.
  • Develops and implements new tactics and channels, such as video to improve efficiency, reach and relevancy.
  • Serves as liaison with BCBSM Marketing Communications and other business unit communications regarding details of the speaking engagement, suggests and negotiates alternatives as needed, and shares information with appropriate SHS staff, including the Executive Office and other SHS leaders.
  • Develops, monitors, and improves processes including: tracking all speaking engagements, and coordinating other important details key to the production of presentations.
  • Develops detailed schedules for producing drafts and final materials, ensuring that there is sufficient review time and coordinating with SHS Senior leaders to accommodate presenter's needs.
  • Develops SHS reports to present to other groups.
  • Directly supervises staff in accordance with company policies
  • Other special projects as assigned.


    Directly supervises exempt and non-exempt staff in accordance with company policies and applicable Federal and State Laws. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, effectively interviewing, hiring, terminating, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and counseling employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; supporting and encouraging the engagement process.

    This position description identifies the responsibilities and tasks typically associated with the performance of the position. Other relevant essential functions may be required.



    Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or a related field. Master's Degree preferred. Relevant combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Continuous learning, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy, is required. Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.


    Five years of experience in a Marketing and/or Health Care environment with demonstrated technical experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Three years supervisory or leadership experience in Marketing and/or Health Care required. Bilingual skills preferred.

  • Able to write quickly in a fast-paced environment, often under intense deadline pressure
  • Strong project- and people-management skills.
  • Must demonstrate leadership ability and team building skills to effectively supervise staff and interact with all levels of management.
  • Must be able to relate easily to diverse individuals and groups, especially at the C-suite level.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, assignments, and deadlines.
  • Excellent listener with ability to act independently and exercise good judgment/decision-making
  • Possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Possess excellent PowerPoint skills.


    Work is performed in an office setting with no unusual hazards. Travel is required (Approximately 25%).
