The Trainee is an entry level position that is part of a formal training program, which begins in Spring 2018. This job is foundational and expected to be a starting point within the insurance industry, with potential growth opportunities in such disciplines as underwriting, business development, and claims.

Upon successful completion of the trainee program the trainee is expected to be familiar with company policies, processes, and terminology related to the insurance industry, proficient in the job responsibilities of a targeted position within one of our career paths, and eligible to be placed within our company.


Frequent travel may be required.

It is also expected that all candidates will be available for relocation within the US, based on business need.


In a Learning Capacity:

  • Learn and develop skills and competencies from performance of assigned duties.
  • Learn and develop skills and competencies in the use of systems, software, and programs.
  • Research and analyze information within career path (Claims, Underwriting/Business Development)
  • Work on special projects as assigned.
  • Compute and provide reports, attend company meetings, and provide feedback to the appropriate supervisor(s).
  • Works with all internal departments to resolve problems and maintain company relations.
  • Participates as necessary on special committees and task forces.

    If placed in Claims:
  • Perform assigned training tasks including specific Claims assignments and assignments designed to introduce the incumbent(s) to all key aspects of the company.
  • Learn and develop skills and competencies related to Claims including verifying workers compensation coverage of employer and injured employee from policy information, determining whether the reported injury is compensable under workers compensation, determining medical causal relationship between employee injury and accident, and manage and approve medical bill payments for non-indemnity and simple indemnity claims.
  • Under supervision of Claims Leadership, responsible for applying claims principles, knowledge and skills based on experience.

    If placed in Underwriting/BD:
  • Calculates, prepares and develops premium quotations using corporate underwriting guidelines within letter of authority
  • Determines underwriting eligibility for prospective policyholders and develops appropriate pricing for new business, renewals, and endorsements
  • Analyzes and reviews prospective accounts for insurability and accepts or rejects within letter of authority.
  • Supports agency relationships.
  • Develops new business and retention of existing business in a given territory or region.
  • Explains and emphasizes benefit of workers' compensation insurance products and services to customers (agents and policyholders).
  • Analyze accounts to determine exposure and proper pricing
  • Reviews loss trends and develops action plans to correct problem areas


    A variety of assessments may be utilized as part of the selection process.



    Associates in related field and certification (such as ARM, CPCU, AU) required; or a Bachelor's degree in related field required. Continuous learning required, as defined by AF Group's learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

    For career paths in Claims, course work in medical terminology is desired.


    With proper education, no experience is required. One-year of relevant experience in an insurance environment or knowledge of worker's compensation is desired. Bi-lingual skills in speaking, writing, or reading English and Spanish are desired.

  • Ability to relocate, if required by business need.
  • Ability to perform other assignments at locations outside of the office.


    Work is performed in the office and occasionally in the field with minimal hazards. Minimal travel is required with occasional overnight stays (Loss Control and Underwriting/BD).

    Additional Working Conditions for Loss Control and Underwriting/BD:
    Work is performed primarily in the field. However, may be required to visit customer locations which may present some unusual hazards. Frequent travel, primarily by auto, is required with overnight stays. Ability to lift and carry computer equipment weighing up to 35 lbs. Must possess a valid driver's license with a record that meets corporate standards.
