Job Description


In a developing capacity, this position will articulate business challenges and requests in technology terms and the development of less complex business cases to convert requests/recommendations and deliverable solutions.


  • Partner with internal team members to propose solutions for business ideas, suggestions, problems and requirements.
  • Develop an understanding of comprehensive requirement specifications as part of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to define functional and non functional requirements that Business Analysts and Developers will use to change new or currently deployed solutions.
  • Engage in and supports optimization of the SDLC process to ensure quality and timely delivery of software solutions.
  • Work within both Agile and Waterfall development methodologies.
  • Support continuous improvement in the agile development process
  • Collaborate with QA team to ensure traceability between defined test cases and elicited testing requirements.
  • Collaborate with Development team to ensure effective hand off of requirements and identification of requirements defects.
  • Support capacity planning to optimize the effectiveness of the department.
  • Support estimation process which includes business users, development representatives, and testing representatives.
  • Conduct demos of new and upcoming functionality, as needed.
  • Define and enforce acceptance criteria for business requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring that business objectives are understood by project team.
  • Assist in prioritization of product backlog items ensuring business priorities and technology advancements are reflected.
  • Attend and participate in meetings such as sprint planning, scrums, demos, and retrospectives.
  • Assist in the leading organization and execution of user acceptance testing.
  • Assist in the management of vendor relationships including priority of deliverables.
  • Partner with internal team members to identify and implement optimal process improvements to ensure effective capture of functional requirements for both enhancement projects and defect resolution.
  • Builds relationships with key business unit resources to gain understanding of overall business unit direction.
  • Partner with internal team members to lead IT activities for small to medium business initiatives using appropriate project management methodology
  • Contribute to status and management reports as required.
  • Participate in configuration changes in systems.

    Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, business administration, or related field. Combinations of relevant education, certifications, and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Continuous learning, as defined by AFHI's learning philosophy, is required. Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.


    One year of progressive responsibility in an IT or business environment with demonstrated technical knowledge which provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities. Experience within the insurance industry highly preferred.


  • Knowledge of business applications, interfaces, network services, and software development.
  • Experience working within both Agile and Waterfall development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of business analysis methods, and/or statistical analysis capabilities.
  • Technical skills to perform analysis and problem solving using a variety of software tools.
  • Ability to be innovative, creative, and think outside of the box when presented with roadblocks.
  • Ability to solve practical problems in potentially chaotic environments
  • Ability to learn the resolution of technological challenges such as, work flow, scheduling, testing processes and procedures.
  • Ability to understand impacts to other areas and project inter-dependencies.
  • Knowledge of Business Models, Process Models, Data Models, Workflow Models, and Object Models as needed.
  • Ability to follow processes and standards for systems or data analysis methods using current (and emerging) industry approaches such as Business Process Management (BPM), Business Process Integration, or Data Modeling with appropriate data warehousing and business intelligence architecture and design methodologies.
  • Knowledge of application of departmental procedures processes and work flows.
  • Ability to learn how to create functional documents such as requirement documents, statements of work, proposals, use cases and other technical documentation standards.
  • Knowledge of the current state of the IT industry related to requirements gathering.
  • Ability to learn how to translate business goals into IT demand.
  • Knowledge of project management tools and processes.
  • Functional and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to support projects using a variety of project management methodologies (bi-modal)
  • Understanding of AF Group's business goals and vision.
  • Ability to collaborate with business representatives to define IT demand that meets business goals.
  • Ability to learn how to define all levels of business and technology requirements.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work with and empower others on a collaborative basis to ensure success of the team.

    Key Skills:

  • Experience working with Document Management tools such as OnBase, Smart Communications, Kofax
  • Experience with analyzing/mapping data to State related forms
  • Experience working in an Agile environment


    Work is performed mainly in an office environment with minimal hazards. Ability to work extended hours as needed. May be exposed to temperatures which may be cooler than a normal office setting. Travel may be required.
